A local man in possession of smuggled cigarettes at home was ordered to settle a BND23,500 fine by the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid ordered 41-year-old Mohammad Azri bin Abdullah Batrah to serve 13 months’ jail in default of payment, after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of 29 cartons and three packets of cigarettes.
The court heard that Customs preventive officers had found the contraband during an inspection of the defendant’s home at Lorong Tiga Selatan Barracks in Seria at 1.40pm on August 9.
