Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) has attained accreditation from the world-renowned Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) United Kingdom (UK) this month for both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes offered by the Mechanical Engineering Programme Area of the Faculty of Engineering.

The accredited Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering will meet, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and also automatically meet in full, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), both with the Engineering Council UK.

The accreditation was also awarded for the Master of Science (by coursework) in Mechanical Engineering programme as meeting the further learning requirement for CEng registration.

Hence, graduates from the accredited MSc programme who also have an accredited BEng (Hons) will satisfy the educational base for Chartered Engineer registration with the Engineering Council UK.

UTB’s Programme Leader of Mechanical Engineering Ir Dr Denni Kurniawan acknowledged the staff and students of the programme area as well UTB management on this achievement.

According to Dr Denni, IMechE expressed confidence in the programmes, giving several commendations about the modules, staff, students, facilities and quality management system.

He added that the strong support provided by the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) whose members are the captains of industry in Brunei and the IMechE Brunei Group signifies a mark of assurance that the Mechanical Engineering programmes meet the standards set by the profession.

The engineering industry will also benefit from the continuing professional development opportunities provided by UTB’s Postgraduate Micro-credentials programme where modules in the accredited MSc Mechanical Engineering can be individually taken up by the public.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor Ir Dr Ramesh Singh Kuldip Singh added that achieving the IMechE UK accreditation is a significant milestone for the university and the country.

He stressed that the faculty is committed to the development and recognition of good practice in engineering education and believed that the engineering programmes offered at UTB are of high quality and are able to produce holistic graduates for the industry.
