The Department of Electrical Services (DES) yesterday issued a warning against meter tampering and unauthorised connection of electricity at residential and commercial premises. Those found guilty of tampering with electricity meters or diverting electricity without authorisation are liable to a fine of up to BND50,000 and imprisonment for no more than three years, or both.

The DES warned that unauthorised and unsafe wiring for energy intensive activities, such as Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency mining, may affect the safety of the public and properties by causing interruption of electricity supply and fires.

DES said it supports development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and other industrial activities that contribute to national economic growth, provided that these establishments operate above board.

The DES advised the public against making any changes to wiring without permission from the Director of Electrical Services, and to appoint contractors registered with the DES for any wiring works.

Those with information on tampering or unauthorised connection of electricity may contact Darussalam Line 123, e-mail to des.info@des.gov.bn or call the Royal Brunei Police Force hotline at 993.
