A 20-year-old Malaysian was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court to settle a BND12,400 fine on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Chung Ka Chai would have to serve a year’s jail in default of payment of the fine.
Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid heard from the prosecutor that customs preventive officers discovered the defendant bringing 16 cartons of undeclared cigarettes in his vehicle during routine inspection at the arrival bay of the Sungai Tujoh Control Post on June 13 at 8.35pm.
