The Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday ordered a 52-year-old female permanent resident to settle a BND18,000 fine after she pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Suparti binti Sunarto would have to serve 13 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
The customs prosecutor informed court that the defendant was arrested by customs preventive officers at a food stall in Kampong Selangan, Temburong District on February 26.
Officers detained the defendant when they found 16 cartons and 83 packets of smuggled cigarettes, which she declared ownership of.
Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid further ordered the cigarettes to be forfeited to the state.
