His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Anisha Rosnah binti Adam attended the launch of the Faith and Devotion art exhibition at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB) yesterday.
At the ceremony, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen officiated the opening of the exhibition as well as attended the launch of the logo of BKISHHB.
The art exhibition is the first of its kind in the country, featuring 20 Orientalist paintings by renowned 19th Century artists. It includes works by Jean-Leon-Gerome, Osman Hamdi Bey and Rudolf Ernst.
The theme, ‘Faith and Devotion’, explores depictions of the many parts of the Muslim world termed as ‘the Orient’ in the 19th Century and shed an important light on Islamic culture and religion at a time when artists from Europe, America and Ottoman empire (later Turkiye) were inspired by the culture and religious practices of the region bordering the Mediterranean and further east.
This includes Morocco in the west; Anatolia and Constantinople in the north; and Egypt, the Levant and India in the east.
