SEOUL (ANN/THE KOREA HERALD/YONHAP) – South Korean zombie thriller Colony has crossed the five-million admissions mark, extending its dominance at the local box office for a fourth consecutive weekend.

Figures released on Monday by the Korean Film Council showed the film attracted 301,053 moviegoers between Friday and Sunday, lifting its cumulative admissions to 5,212,824 as of the weekend’s close.

The achievement makes Colony only the second film released this year to surpass five million admissions in South Korea, following historical drama The King’s Warden.

Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the filmmaker behind the internationally acclaimed zombie hit Train to Busan (2016), Colony centres on biotechnology professor Se-jeong, played by Jun Ji-hyun, who joins a group of survivors attempting to escape a building sealed off during a deadly viral outbreak.

The cast also includes Koo Kyo-hwan as a researcher with the unusual ability to control zombies, while Ji Chang-wook and Kim Shin-rok portray survivors struggling to stay alive amid the chaos.

The film has maintained strong audience interest since its release, helping it remain firmly at the top of South Korea’s weekend box-office rankings.

Coming in second was Korean comedy Wild Sing, starring Gang Dong-won. The film drew 205,100 admissions over the weekend, bringing its overall total to 869,720.

Meanwhile, Hollywood director Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction thriller Disclosure Day opened in third place after selling 112,388 tickets during its debut weekend.

Industry observers will be watching closely to see whether Colony can continue its strong theatrical run as new domestic and international releases enter the market in the coming weeks.
