Five undergraduates from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) left the Sultanate for Osaka, Japan yesterday to participate in the Osaka University International Certificate Programme in halal science, technology and innovation.

Present at the Brunei International Airport to see off the students were UNISSA Rector Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal; Acting Assistant Rector (Students Affairs and Alumni) Pengiran Dr Hajah Norkhairiah binti Pengiran Haji Hashim and representatives from other faculties.

The programme is a collaboration between Osaka University and three higher learning institutions in the Sultanate, including UNISSA. The programme, which runs for 19 months, began last November.

The programme aims to provide knowledge on science and technology for halal products and services innovation, as well as to gain practical knowledge and experience in the field through interactions with industry professionals in Japan, particularly in districts with large Muslim populations. The programme also enables students to prepare for their careers and provides them with confidence to compete in the international job market.

The 15 undergraduates are made of students of Master of Halal Science at the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre, five students from Master of Islamic Media and Communication Technology of the Faculty of Islam Technology and one student from Master of Laws (International Law) from the Shariah and Law Faculty.
