Social media issues and incidence are the most common reported cases received by the Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT), followed by scams, blackmailing and extortion.

This was said by Head of BruCERT and Cyber Watch Centre Haji Mas Zuraime bin Haji Abdul Hamid in his presentation, ‘Brunei Darussalam Cyber Threat Landscape’ at the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2022 (Brunei MYCE 2022) – Digital Technology Week on Wednesday.

Other cases include malware, phishing, cyberbully, and cryptocurrency. He said most attacks on computers were malicious software which constitute to 54 per cent, followed by other activities (25 per cent) – root level intrusion with 21 per cent and user level intrusion with four per cent – while 14 per cent attributes to reconnaissance.

He added a weak password makes attacks on organisations more vulnerable as the credentials are exposed online and there is need to fix the problem as soon as possible to prevent people from gaining access.

Meanwhile, BruCERT officially launched its new website www.secureverifyconnect.info on Wednesday, in its continuous effort to foster a culture of responsible Internet use in the community and increase public awareness about online threats.

The website was initially introduced to the public in 2013 to complement BruCERT’s ongoing Secure Verify Connect (SVC) public awareness campaign.

The website aims to provide the public with easy access to advice and guidance on common issues related to online safety including social media, cyberbullying, online predators, Internet addiction and online safety for children.

The latest version of the SVC website is now easier for the public to look for information catered to a wide range of audience from students, parents and businesses to individuals.

It also includes the latest BruCERT news, cyber threat alerts, advisories, awareness videos and webinars.

Educators will find useful resources including posters and booklets to support them in educating people about online safety.

To encourage the public to visit the site and learn about cybersecurity, BruCERT is conducting a Digital Treasure Hunt until June 20. Players who successfully complete the hunt will have a chance to win cash prizes.
