The demand for electricity in Brunei Darussalam is forecast to grow annually by 1.5 per cent, and to meet the future requirement, the current installed capacity at 893 Megawatts will need to be increased to 1,200 Megawatts by 2027.

This was said by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof during the opening of the ‘Energy Security and Energy Transition: Today and Tomorrow’ exhibition yesterday, adding that the Sultanate’s peak demand for electricity in 2021 stood at 687 Megawatts.

The minister added that the Department of Energy aims to increase the total share of renewable energy in the power generation mix as part of the growth, beginning with at least 200 Megawatts of renewable energy by 2025; and to at least 30 per cent of the power generation mix by 2035.

He shared that the start of a 30-Megawatt Solar Power Plant to be operational within the next few years will be the first major step towards achieving that target.

“With limited land availability, an innovative way to grow the renewable energy capacity is through the Floating Solar Photovoltaic, and this is currently being pursued as the most pragmatic way forward,” he said.
