The Eco Festival will mark the end of Climate Action Week of the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2022 (Brunei MYCE 2022) tomorrow at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex (Yayasan Complex).

The festival will feature creative showcases and fun activities organised by public and private agencies as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs). It is a joint venture initiative to raise public awareness, especially the key industries in supporting to reduce carbon emissions through daily activities.

The event will start with a Subuh prayer and Tazkirah at the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque followed by the Eco Festival launch at the entrance of Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, which will include morning fitness, a video launching at BIBD Eco Cine and tree-planting activities.

Several activities are lined up at several spots for the festival.

A Sustainable Nation Showcase by the Community for Brunei will be held at the Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas parking area, which will include Donate-A-Tree campaign by Progresif Sdn Bhd; Sustainable Schools exhibition by Jerudong International School and International School Brunei; and a showcase from Future Energy Lions (Shell). A Thryff Market by Thryffy will see the participation of local small players in the thrift industry, from 5am to 9pm.

Meanwhile, the Sustainable Art Tour will showcase the Floating Garden Prototype at the jetty area near Kaizen Restaurant, while the electric vehicle (EV) short cruise will be held at its parking area. The floating garden will be held until June 28.

Other activities include the Live Sculpture, Yayasan Food Street, Drop Off Composting 101 and Upcycled Stadium Chairs showcase at the Yayasan Complex’s Open Plaza, while the Crafts Tunnel by Sparks Co will be held at the tunnel area.

The Live Sculpture and the Upcycled Stadium Chairs showcase will run until June 28, while the Crafts Tunnel will be open to the public tomorrow and on July 3.

Meanwhile, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation encouraged the public to adopt greener habits and switch to eco-friendly alternatives to replace single-use items to reusable ones for the Eco Festival. Several vendors will participate in the initiative.

“The public is encouraged to bring their own reusables such as reusable bags, tumblers, containers and tiffins when purchasing from the vendors,” the department said in a statement.

The department introduced the Bring Your Own Reusables initiative as part of the deliverables under Strategy 7: Waste Management of Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy launched on July 25, 2020.
