SEOUL (ANN/THE KOREA HERALD) – A mass nap competition will be held along the Han River next month as city authorities promote rest and outdoor leisure among urban residents.
The “2026 Hangang Nap Competition” is scheduled for May 2 from 3pm to 6pm at the multipurpose plaza in Yeouido Hangang Park.
Around 170 participants will be selected through an application process, with organisers reviewing personal submissions before confirming entries. Participants will compete to demonstrate the “best nap” using their preferred methods, with items such as yoga mats, beanbags and camping chairs provided to create a relaxed setting.
The event forms part of the city’s “Reading at Hangang Park” programme, inspired by scenes of visitors resting or dozing while reading by the river. Officials said the initiative aims to encourage people to take a break from daily routines and recharge in a calm outdoor environment.
Strict rules will be enforced to maintain a quiet atmosphere. Participants who wake up, stand, use the restroom or create disturbances such as phone noise after the competition begins will be disqualified.
Judging criteria will be announced on the day, with prizes awarded to the top three participants.
Applications will open on April 16 via the event’s official website, with further details available through its online platforms.
